Goodness I have some good looking friends.

Project Rameau

Friday 12th July at The Playhouse QPAC
There are two internationally stunning companies in Australia who are regarded by many as the best in their field. The Australian Chamber Orchestra (founded in 1975) under the direction of the inspiring Richard Tognetti AO since 1989 is often touted as the greatest chamber orchestra in the world. I have been going to their concerts periodically for over two decades. The other great group is the Sydney Dance Company and they have been entertaining me also for several decades. They were formed in 1969 and renamed in 1979 and for so long under the direction of the great dancer and supreme choreographer Graeme Murphy with his outstanding co dancer Janet Vernon both of whom I saw many times. Early stars were people like Paul Mercurio whom I once chatted with at length in the Green Room at the Sydney Opera House when he was just new to the company and also stunning aboriginal star Kim Walker. Stephen Page who went on to found the Bangarra Dance Theatre of indigenous dance I once saw dancing Tadzio with Graeme as Aschenbach in After Venice.
To see both great companies performing together for the first time was a gift seldom seen and truly rewarding.
Today the company is run by the Spanish born Rafael Bonachela and Project Rameau is the first of his works I have seen on stage. The evening was so special and at one time I found the combination of music and dance soi beautiful I cried.
Of particular import to me were two dancers whom I found captivating. Thomas Bradley who was used for the publicity and whose confidence, style and beauty compelled you to not take your eyes off him when on stage. He possesses true star quality that emanates from his subtle smile, original haircut and amazing elegance and ability.

The other outstanding dancer of the evening was the very tall and perfect Andrew Crawford who was mesmerising and the flow of rhythm as it ripped along his extended legs and arms to his fingertips was just awesome to behold. Power and sweeping grace that has to be seen to be believed.

Fire and Forest

Fire

Australia being an old dry country is prone to fire and has been for a very long time. So much of our vegetation depends on regular burns to encourage re-growth and seed distribution. It is a cycle that was aided by the indigenous population who regularly set controlled fires to help in their hunting. Fire, as elsewhere, is the centre of communal life, cooking and ceremony. One of the great turning points in mankind's development was the discovery of fire and how to preserve what was created by nature's lightning and eventually the discovery of how to make it. It is part of our soul to contemplate and be absorbed by the flame; the dance of the bright yellow fingers, the warmth, the light.
Ceremony and entertainment is made powerful with fire.

From Brian Kenny's channel
The Boy with Fire in His Eyes
The boy with fire in his eyes
Stands there waiting.
It is his soul inside;
It keeps him standing.
And if ever the fire goes out,
He will freeze in the cold.
It is his heat
And all that keeps him living.
Or if it never is put to use,
It will consume him;
He will burn to the ground
His ashes left behind.
But if the fire blazes,
If kindled, kept and carried,
If the boy with fire in his eyes
Finds life inside that fire,
His fire will light the world,
Will pierce the mist,
A fire to drive the dark away
Forever and ever more.
Boys playing with fire.
Forest
Mankind came down from the trees and walked upright across the grassy plains, but the safety of the forest as a place to hide, to forage, to sleep and to seek protection from the elements is second nature to us. Have you walked through the bush and felt the spirit of the plants that surround you. Have you been aware of the smell of life and the symbiotic nature of the exchange of carbon of which all living things are made and the oxygen which fires our life process.
From the Trees to the Grasslands
Meditate in the bush.
As mentioned Australia is prone to fire and is largely desert. Forests do exist but we mainly refer to of unique trees etc as the Bush or the Scrub. Huge Tropical Rain Forests do exist on the East Coast and we also have pre historic trees still growing. It is varied and one can still find the unknown, the unpopulated and the surroundings worthy of contemplation.

Seph Stanek - Baritenor

At a mere 25 Seph Stanek is a singer on the rise. Referring to himself at this stage as a Baritenor, meaning he has the range from Baritone to Tenor. Now based in New York after moving quickly from place to place and from recitals to The Twelve Irish Tenors to the classical crossover group Figaro to The Metropolitan Opera to Carnegie Hall to Broadway Bares to Naked Boys Singing. He has appeared also with such iconic legends as Bernadette Peters, Carol Channing and Debbie Reynolds. This boy has been praised in the New York Times and other publications and even though he is so young he appears to be on an upward trajectory fuelled by determination, confidence, an exceptional winning personality, beautiful good looks and talent.
